Global Burden of Disease 2005: call for collaborators

Parasitic worm infections, sometimes known as helminthiases, are a group of tropical disorders that impact at least 2 billion people globally. Infection can adversely affect physical, nutritional, and cognitive development in young children, resulting in poor school or work performance. In 2018, it was predicted that 310 million preschoolers, 762 million school-aged children, and 688 million women of reproductive age were at risk of somatotropic hormone (STH) infection. For compiling survey data of helminth infection, World Health Organization created the Global Atlas of Helminth Infections. In this chapter, the details about flatworms, such as flukes and tapeworms, and roundworms such as nematodes are described, along with the anthelminthic drugs used for the treatment of these parasitic worm infections. Furthermore, the parasite drug resistance and methods to overcome them are also discussed to identify and develop new target-based drug candidate.
