2014, Acta BiomaterialiaCitation Excerpt :MG-63 cells were used for the following reasons: firstly, MG-63 cells display the integrin molecules that are required for cell adhesion, making them an appropriate model for the present study and secondly, the response of MG-63 cells to the administration of 1,25(OH)2D3 (the active form of vitamin D) has been shown to be similar to normal human osteoblast cells [90]. Additionally, human and MG63 cells produce cAMP in response to parathyroid hormone therapy [91,92]. Moreover, MG-63 cells are an excellent model for studying the antioxidant properties of bioactive glasses; they have been used in a variety of studies, especially for their use in capsaicin-induced apoptosis via the caspase cascade and the antioxidant enzyme system, and okadaic acid-induced apoptosis through the PKR, NF-κB and caspase pathway.
