Perioperative acetaminophen is associated with reduced acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery
2024, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Similar results were reported by a recent retrospective study in children20; however, data in adults are limited. Although the mechanism by which acetaminophen protects the kidneys is not completely understood, it is hypothesized that the effect is related to the drug's anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, specifically its ability to inhibit hemolysis-induced lipid peroxidation.13,14 Recent studies have associated a higher degree of CPB-induced hemolysis with an increased risk for AKI.8-10
