We would like to thank Liao and colleagues for their attention to our study1 and for the results of their nationwide cohort study reporting a higher incidence of diabetes mellitus in ankylosing spondylitis (AS).2
In our study, we did not assess the cardiovascular risk profile or evaluate the incidence of diabetes mellitus among AS patients. We completely agree that there might be a relationship between a higher incidence of diabetes and the increased risk of cardiovascular events found in AS patients. Assessment of AS patients should include examination for the presence of diabetes mellitus. As stated by Liao and colleagues, additional studies are needed to draw strong conclusions regarding the association between diabetes and AS.
