Abnormalities in Host Defense Associated with HIV Infection
2013, Clinics in Chest MedicineCitation Excerpt :Since the early era of widespread HIV infection, the variety of pulmonary infections encountered in the infected population demonstrated that HIV severely impairs lung host defenses.1 Although most investigations focus on HIV’s effects on systemic immunity, an increasing body of literature examines pulmonary immune and inflammatory mechanisms during HIV infection.2 As impairments in pulmonary host defense are better understood, strategies to correct these defects may be developed for treatment and prophylaxis of pulmonary infections.3

2002, ChestCitation Excerpt :After infection with HIV, it appears alveolar macrophages recruit CD8+ T cells into the lung from secondary lymphoid tissues.40 These cells have a number of highly specialized functions, including lysis of certain HIV-infected cells.41 Coincident with HIV disease progression is a complex series of immune cellular events favoring viral replication.42
