Rheumatoid arthritis and risk of lung cancer: Meta-analysis and Mendelian randomization study
2021, Seminars in Arthritis and RheumatismIs long-term particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide air pollution associated with incident monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS)? An analysis of the Heinz Nixdorf Recall study
2017, Environment InternationalCitation Excerpt :It has been demonstrated that IL-6 is an important growth factor for myeloma cells (Klein et al., 1995). Also, IL-6 levels have been found to be increased in MM patients (Nachbaur et al., 1990), and early work shows that MM is more common in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (Katusic et al., 1985; Isomaki et al., 1982). Another study also found an association between respiratory tract infections and MM (Landgren et al., 2006).
Relapsed/Refractory Multiple Myeloma: Defining Refractory Disease and Identifying Strategies to Overcome Resistance
2012, Seminars in HematologyCitation Excerpt :It is possible that chronic antigen stimulation, with its associated lymphocyte activation, may play a role in MM development. Several studies have shown a higher than expected incidence of MM among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA); however, factors such as a shared predisposition for the development of RA and MM, a high rate of RA among first-degree relatives of patients with MM, and use of corticosteroids may also play a role.38–43 Additionally, certain viral infections such as hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, and human immunodeficiency virus have been implicated in the development of MM, albeit with variable findings and quality of supporting data.44–47
Risk of multiple myeloma and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance among white and black male United States veterans with prior autoimmune, infectious, inflammatory, and allergic disorders
2008, BloodCitation Excerpt :We also did not find a significant excess of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). An excess risk of RA has previously been noted in patients with MM in some studies,14,44,45 but not in others.16,34,46 This discrepancy may be due to reverse causality, as there are clinical reports of RA or RA-like polyarthritis being the first manifestation of MM47 or MGUS.48
Persistent Chronic Inflammation Contributes to the Development of Cancer in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis from a Defined Population of Northwestern Spain
2007, Seminars in Arthritis and RheumatismCitation Excerpt :Association between cancer and RA has been well documented in case reports, series reports, and epidemiological studies (1,3,5,9,30). Increased occurrence of malignancies such as Hodgkin’s, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, or multiple myeloma has been described in several cohort studies (4,31-36). In a cross-sectional population-based study, Sihvonen and coworkers reported that Finnish RA patients were at increased risk of dying of urogenital, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and cardiovascular diseases, infections, and cancer when compared with the general population or controls (37).
