The utility of serial plasma sE-selectin measurements in the prediction of retinopathy of prematurity in premature infants
2014, Early Human DevelopmentCitation Excerpt :The second phase of ROP is characterized by hypoxia-induced up-regulation of pro-angiogenic growth factors such as VEGF and erythropoietin stimulating retinal neovascularization which in severe cases, leads to uncontrolled vascular growth into the vitreous [5,8]. As sE-selectin has been postulated by experimental evidence to be a potent angiogenic mediator [16,18,19,24], its role in other vasculoproliferative disease has become an area of interest [20,21]. sE-selectin was found to have positive associations with diabetic retinopathy [28].
PKA turnover by the REGγ-proteasome modulates FoxO1 cellular activity and VEGF-induced angiogenesis
2014, Journal of Molecular and Cellular CardiologyCitation Excerpt :Both VCAM-1 and E-Selectin are subject to regulation by VEGF and play a pro-angiogenic role, contributing to the cross-regulation of angiogenesis and inflammation [6,7]. Elevated levels of soluble E-selectin have been found in patients with vasculoproliferative disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis [8] and in malignant tumors [9]. Serum VCAM-1 has been proposed as a surrogate marker for angiogenesis in breast cancer [10].

2008, Rheumatoid ArthritisE-selectin permits communication between PAF receptors and TRPC channels in human neutrophils
2006, BloodCitation Excerpt :The selectin family of receptors is critical for the appropriate recruitment of neutrophils to sites of infection or tissue injury and the initiation and progression of the inflammatory response. We have previously shown that soluble E-selectin acts to promote neutrophil adhesion, inhibit migration, and amplify destructive responses,21 raising the possibility that elevated levels of soluble E-selectin in patients with inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and associated with tumor growth, have a proinflammatory effect.25 In leukocytes, PAF acts through a specific G protein-coupled receptor to induce chemotaxis.
