Management of established rheumatoid arthritis with an emphasis on pharmacotherapy
2007, Best Practice and Research: Clinical RheumatologyCitation Excerpt :Combining DMARDs has proved to be more effective and less toxic than single treatment in patients with early and established RA.68 DMARD combination therapy slows down radiographic joint damage progression more powerfully10,69,70 and combining DMARDs probably reduces drug resistance and, therefore, prolongs drug survival compared with single DMARD therapy.71 In early RA, intensive DMARD combination strategies are used to attain complete suppression of the disease process as soon as possible10,72 and the step-down strategy is most often used.
