2007, Magnetic Resonance ImagingCitation Excerpt :However, a major problem in the management of RA is the paucity of reliable methods for monitoring joint inflammation, disease progression and therapeutic response. Particularly in the early phase of the disease, conventional methods such as clinical examination, laboratory tests and conventional radiography (which only shows the late signs of preceding synovitis) are neither sensitive nor specific and do not allow detailed evaluation of synovial inflammation [5,6]. Over the past few years, evidence has accumulated that MRI can identify joint damage in patients with RA earlier and more sensitively than can other techniques and that MRI can visualize and monitor the changes in synovium and bone that precede bone erosion [7–12].
