Enrollment
Patients were eligible for this study if they were scheduled to undergo primary unilateral or bilateral THA by one of the participating surgeons and were fluent in English. Several days before surgery, patients completed the following self-administered questionnaires:
The Hospital for Special Surgery Total Hip Replacement Expectations Survey is a patient-derived questionnaire that focuses specifically on expectations of THA. The survey was developed with 180 THA patients, successfully tested for
Results
A total of 1,103 patients undergoing primary THA were enrolled between March 1998 and June 2000. Demographic characteristics are listed in Table 1. As anticipated, most patients had osteoarthritis of the hip. Only 7% had bilateral procedures during one operative setting. One third were working for monetary reimbursement and two thirds had someone at home to care for them postoperatively.
Discussion
As a result of this study with 1,103 patients, we found that patients with worse preoperative status measured by the Hip/Knee Module and the SF-36 had more expectations of THA and also were more likely to rate their expectations as very important compared with patients with better status. These results were found using a scale specifically designed to measure expectations of THA and standardized scales to measure hip-specific and general overall health. In addition, we found that older patients

2022, Journal of ArthroplastyCitation Excerpt :It was developed by Mancuso et al [4] in a cohort of 180 THA patients, who were interviewed 2-3 years after surgery and asked an open-ended expectation question. Forty-five different expectations were obtained which were summarized into 18 items [17,42]. Comparison between the items of the HSS-HRES and the ExpSurv revealed that there were slight differences in expectations regarding disease-specific items, whereas patients emphasized topics on general health status or health-related quality of life as more pronounceable.
