Musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) is an imaging tool applicable in the detection and scoring of elementary lesions in patients with knee and hand OA. After defining and reaching a consensus on the US detected elementary lesions in patients with hand and knee OA, the reliability of the agreed scoring system has been tested. In both cases, using semi-quantitative and/or dichotomous scales, the results showed moderate to good reliability. The results vary depending on the elementary lesion tested. For example, there was good reliability for osteophyte scoring in hand OA but fair to moderate for cartilage with intermediate degrees of damage according to the proposed scoring systems. Other joints will be tested in the future with the purpose of assessing reliability of the scoring these elementary OA lesions.
