Background Spanish Rheumatology League (Liga Reumatolόgica Española, LIRE) is developing an application for mobile devices and web browsers that incorporates a map of resources for rheumatic patients and professionals who treat them (Reumappa). This app helps locate with ease professionals and specialized services in rheumatic pathologies in Spain. A focus group with rheumatic patients was conducted in a previous phase in order to identify which fields of health professionals are required to manage their disease. It was then considered interesting to know whether there are relevant aspects of these specialties that distinguish professionals who can provide better care for rheumatic patients.
Objectives To identify key issues that health professionals should have to bring added value in the management of rheumatic patients.
Methods Focus Group with health professionals selected by patients as useful for the management of their disease (occupational therapist, physiotherapist, podiatrist, nurse, nutritionist, dentist, psychologist, and 2 social workers), sex (4 male, 5 female), age (3 <45, 6>45), years of professional experience (3 <10, 6>10), sector (5 private, 4 public). Key question: “What aspects do you think add value to the care your specialty provides to rheumatic patients?”.
Results Table 1 shows the results of the focus group. N = nurse, SW = social worker, OT = occupational therapist, Nu = nutritionist, Po = podiatrist, Psi = psychologist, Phy = physiotherapist, D = dentist.
Conclusions All health professionals who treat rheumatic patients should have at least a general knowledge of rheumatic diseases. Most health professionals should have a knowledge of drug treatments and recommended exercises. Nurses, psychologists, and physiotherapists require greater specialization to treat these patients.
