Background Rheumatology is a fascinating medical subspeciality. Over 200 syndromes and diagnosis have been described in rheumatology and recently lot of thrust has been given to improve the Rheumatology both in government and private sectors in health care in India. Rheumatology as super specialty in India is slowly gaining prominence, however public awareness still needs to improve.
Objectives 1. To assess the awareness of rheumatology and musculoskeletal health among the medical students (year 3). 2. To gain insight in to their knowledge about this medical subspecialty, in order to improve their educational tools and sessions, which inturn will shape up the changes in their curriculum.(MBBS)
Methods This survey was conducted as anonymised questionnaire. All 3rd yr medical students were requested to express their opinion while answering on a scale of 1 to 10.
Results 118 students participated in this survey and answered 10 questions:
Conclusions Although this is the first of its kind, young medical students have insights in to the rheumatology around the world. They are aware about the multisystem nature of the diseases, research benefits and support to the charities. We are aware about their interests.
We need to improve the access to rheumatology education and help our patients. There has been increasing awareness about the EULAR/BSR/ACR/APLAR- the four big leagues around the world, which guide the patients and medical professionals in Rheumatology
