In the area of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal diseases there are many myths and misperceptions, we are all witness to “it is a disease of the elderly”, “we can't do much”, “it is just pain” etc. These misconceptions are not only occurring among the general public, but also among the policy makers, the scientific society and in many cases among the people with RMDs as well.
There is a need to bring these issues to the surface and to inform and educate all the stakeholders for the realistic facts of RMDs, the benefits if we effectively tackle these diseases, to share the patient perspective and a call to act immediately in order to improve the life of more than 120,000,000 people with RMDs in Europe.
The Standing Committee of PARE (people with arthritis and rheumatism in Europe) one of the 8 standing committees of Eular, working together with Eular's other pillars, the scientific community and health professionals, rank this as one of the most important topics and as high priority. Activities are organized for raising awareness, educating patient delegates and supporting National activities in this respect and it also acts as a platform to enhance and exchange knowledge, skills and best practice between our national organizations.
Raising awareness is very much connected to the recognition of RMDs as major diseases and for the implementation of measures and in forwarding strategy plans for the early diagnosis and the effective management of RMDs, and also legislations for the full inclusion of people with RMDs in society and for more funds for research.
