Biologic therapies are very efficacious in chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthritis. However, the increasing number of Biologic therapies, are making the decisions which patients have to take about care and treatment, more complicated. This talk will present some information about biologicals: why are they different from standard disease modifying drugs such as methotrexate? How are they administered? We will then discuss the latest advances in biological treatment, both in terms of drugs available and/or licensed, mechanisms of action, efficacy and safety. Where possible, we will see how these drugs might be used in a more targeted way in years to come when we are able to understand more about why some people respond to one biologic drug, but not another.
