Background Chronic widespread pain (CWP) is a common health problem within the community and among the working population [1]. This has been identified as one of the most common complains encountered in general practice and in rheumatology clinics. However, this was not properly studied among the attendees of general practice in Sri Lanka.

Objectives This study was carried out to identify the prevalence and associated factors of CWP among the attendees of general practice

Methods All the adults (above 30 years) who were attended to a general practice in a rural area of Galle district during January 2011 were included in the study. The general practitioner collected the data and diagnosis of CWP was made using the “Manchester definition” for CWP. It defined CWP as “pain reported in at least two sections of two contralateral limbs and in the axial skeleton, and have been present for at least three months”.

Results Out of the 620 eligible participants only 556 participated in the survey with a non response rate of 10.3%. Out of the participants’ majority were (57.9%) females. Mean age was 54.4 years. Prevalence of the CWP among females (13.0%) was higher compared to the prevalence among males (8.5%). Overall prevalence was 11.1%. Female gender, age above 60 years, low socio-economic status, low education status and having co-morbidities were associated with the CWP.

Conclusions Although it is a highly neglected problem in Sri Lanka, more than 10% of the adult population attending to a general practice is suffering from CWP. Therefore, general practitioners have to be more vigilant about the diagnosis and the management of CWP.
