Background
Cytokines contribute to the host defence by an overall tuning of the immune system. Nevertheless, an excessive and uncontrolled production of proinflammatory cytokines can be responsible for the onset and maintenance of chronic inflammatory diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
