Genetic factors are hypothesised to play a role in the susceptibility to antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) based on several family studies in patients with anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL) and/or clinical manifestations of APS. APS can occur alone (primary APS) or in conjunction with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Therefore, APS and SLE may, in part, share a common mechanism for disease onset or progression.
