Rheumatology. A coloured guide. By J M H Moll. (Pp 158; £9.50). Edinburgh: Churchill Livingstone, 1997. ISBN 0443058059.
As part of the “Colour guide series” I feel this book is almost certainly aimed for exam preparation for either final MB or MRCP.
The colour plates are excellent and would be particularly helpful for those preparing for the slide section in the MRCP examination. Although a wide spectrum of rheumatological disorders is covered there are some glaring omissions such as in the area of vasculitis, with no mention of Wegener’s granulomatosis, microscopic polyarteritis or Churg-Strauss syndrome. The main criticism of the book, however, regards the accompanying text. There are a number of factual errors, for example, 6% of women are affected by rheumatoid arthritis, and in the area of management and treatment for the various disorders the text is in parts historically redundant. No recognition of the changes in rheumatology of the past 10 years is readily identifiable, particularly as regards common disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, and osteoporosis. Although the author does not claim the book to be a definite text, it should be relatively up to date with the current thoughts on treatment and management. Overall the book has some excellent clinical and radiographic pictures of what is and remains essentially a clinical specialty. The text is somewhat disappointing, occasionally inaccurate, and out of date.
