Anti-TNF[alpha] treatment in rheumatoid arthritis: an update on safety

Abstract

Agents that block the action of tumour necrosis factor- alpha (TNF) are established as effective agents in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), especially in patients with disease unresponsive to standard disease-modifying therapy (DMARDs) (1) . Blockade of this cytokine is likely to have effects beyond the suppression of synovial inflammation and there is concern that such effects might be associated with severe adverse events.
